Medical-grade fibers for implantable and high-performance devices
ICF is a U.S.-based manufacturer of medical-grade fibers and yarns used in implantable and high-performance medical devices. ICF specializes in polyester (PET), high tenacity PET, nylon 6 and nylon 6,6, and resorbable fibers including PGA, PGLA, PLLA, PLA, PCL, as well as custom blends. ICF also offers advanced materials such as UHMWPE and para-aramids. ICF’s materials are engineered for critical applications such as sutures, vascular grafts, orthopedic devices, heart valves, and catheter reinforcement, where consistency, strength, and reliability are essential.
ICF differentiates itself through controlled manufacturing, full material traceability, and a transparent supply chain. From qualified resin sourcing through extrusion, twisting, and packaging, every step is managed to ensure consistent fiber performance from development through commercialization. With dedicated U.S.-based medical manufacturing and ISO-13485 certified quality systems, ICF provides supply chain stability, responsive lead times, and close technical collaboration. ICF is one of the few U.S.-based suppliers offering controlled medical fiber manufacturing with full traceability from raw material through finished yarn.
Medical Grade Polyester and Nylon Fibers
ICF’s standard tenacity medical grade polyester fibers are widely used in vascular grafts, sutures, and hernia repair applications where consistent performance, dimensional stability, and predictable behavior under load are required. Our high tenacity polyester fibers are engineered to provide improved mechanical performance, increased tenacity, and reliable behavior under load. These high tenacity PET fibers are used in orthopedic applications where additional strength and durability are needed and are available off the shelf to support rapid sampling and development timelines. In addition to polyester, ICF also offers nylon 6 and nylon 6,6 fibers, which are commonly used in sutures and neurovascular applications where flexibility and conformability are critical.
To ensure consistency, ICF maintains full traceability of resins and spin finishes used in medical grade polyester and nylon fibers. This control reduces variability and supports repeatable downstream processes such as braiding, weaving, and knitting. The result is a fiber platform that performs consistently across qualification, validation, and commercial production.
Colored Polyester Fibers for Medical Applications
ICF manufactures colored polyester fibers in blue, green and black for medical devices using a solution-dyed process, where pigment is incorporated directly into the polymer during extrusion. This approach delivers uniform color distribution, lot-to-lot repeatability, and long-term color stability in the final product. Colored polyester fibers are commonly used in sutures, vascular grafts, and device identification features where both performance and visual differentiation are required.
All pigments used in colored polyester fibers are FDA-compliant, batch-certified, and tested to meet applicable regulatory requirements. Full traceability of pigments, resins, and spin finish systems is maintained to ensure consistent performance. Colored fibers are available across a wide range of deniers within ICF’s multifilament platform, enabling seamless integration into braiding, weaving, and knitting processes.
Resorbable Fibers for Medical Device Applications
ICF produces medical‑grade resorbable fibers for implantable device applications, including PGA, PGLA, PLLA, PCL, PLA, and custom copolymer blends when required. These fibers are engineered for use in absorbable sutures, orthopedic constructs, and tissue scaffolds, where controlled mechanical performance during the healing phase is essential. Each formulation is designed to deliver predictable strength retention and consistent degradation behavior, both of which are critical in regulated implantable systems where variability cannot be tolerated.
ICF maintains full traceability of the base polymer, additives, and spin finish used in all resorbable fiber programs. This includes documented lot‑to‑lot control, handling under freezer storage, and processing using vacuum sealing and custom packaging; capabilities required to preserve polymer integrity and meet resorbable‑material handling standards.
Through controlled extrusion, validated processing parameters, and close collaboration with development and manufacturing teams, ICF aligns fiber properties with application‑specific performance targets, supporting confidence in both textile performance and long‑term manufacturability.
UHMWPE and Para-Aramid Fibers for Medical Devices
ICF supplies UHMWPE and para-aramid fibers for medical devices requiring high strength, flexibility, and long-term durability. UHMWPE fibers are widely used in implantable orthopedic applications due to their exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and established biocompatibility. Para-aramid fibers provide high thermal stability and dimensional control, making them well suited for catheter reinforcement and other non-implantable applications where processing conditions are demanding.
Through qualified supplier partnerships and controlled sourcing, ICF ensures consistent availability and performance across both material platforms. Fibers can be delivered on standard packages or backwound onto Steeger bobbins, enabling direct integration into braiding processes. This flexibility supports efficient manufacturing and allows customers to confidently incorporate these materials into applications where both mechanical performance and processing stability are critical.
Medical Yarn Development and Custom Fiber Solutions
ICF provides medical yarn development and custom fiber solutions to support customers from early-stage design through commercial production. Our in-house capabilities include extrusion, draw winding, texturing, twisting, plying, scouring, and rewinding; enabling full control over yarn construction and performance. These custom fiber solutions are tailored to meet specific requirements such as denier, filament count, tenacity, elongation, and final yarn construction.
In addition to development, ICF supports customers with yarn analysis and material characterization to help define and replicate existing or legacy constructions. This includes quantifying key fiber and yarn properties to support sourcing, qualification, and redesign efforts. By combining process control with full traceability of resin and spin finish inputs, ICF delivers solutions that reduce variability and improve manufacturability. We work closely with customers to support proof-of-concept development and ensure a smooth transition to scalable, repeatable production.
Fiber Traceability and U.S. Medical Manufacturing
ICF delivers fiber traceability and U.S. medical manufacturing for customers requiring consistent quality and regulatory support. Our fiber traceability includes full traceability into resin supply, spin finishes, and complete processing history for each production lot. This level of traceability supports qualification, validation, and long-term product consistency.
Through U.S. medical manufacturing in dedicated facilities, ICF maintains strict control over documentation, process validation, and quality systems. Supported by ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 13485:2016 certifications, our operations are structured to meet the expectations of medical device manufacturers. ICF is fully open to customer audits and works collaboratively with partners to support qualification, validation, and ongoing compliance requirements.
