Boston Scientific has announced plans to acquire Bolt Medical, a California-based medical device company specializing in intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) technology, in a deal valued at up to $664 million. The agreement includes an upfront payment of $443 million, with an additional $221 million contingent on achieving specific regulatory milestones.
As an early strategic investor, Boston Scientific already holds a 26% equity stake in Bolt Medical. This acquisition secures the remaining 74% of the company.
Bolt Medical’s IVL system utilizes acoustic pressure waves generated within a balloon catheter to break down arterial calcium. The company recently completed two clinical trials, RESTORE ATK and RESTORE BTK, to evaluate the system’s safety and effectiveness. The trial results will support regulatory submissions for U.S. FDA approval and CE mark certification.
“Representing one of the fastest growing medical device segments, IVL therapy addresses a significant unmet need for patients with complex calcified arterial disease through a minimally invasive approach,” Lance Bates, senior vice president and president of interventional cardiology therapies with Boston Scientific, said in a statement. “Bolt Medical is developing a next-generation technology that is highly complementary to our existing portfolio. The addition of this system to our offerings can help us better serve physicians and their patients and provides a platform for future innovation.”
This acquisition is part of Boston Scientific’s ongoing strategy to expand its cardiovascular portfolio. Earlier in 2024, the company acquired Silk Road Medical, a leader in stroke prevention technologies, for approximately $1.16 billion.
