Stryker Rolls Out Surpass Elite® Flow Diverter Across US, South Korea, and Europe

Stryker has officially launched the Surpass Elite Flow Diverter commercially in the United States, South Korea, and Europe. This advanced device marks a major step forward in flow diversion, integrating a refined implant design with a proprietary surface treatment aimed at boosting performance and lowering thrombin production.

The Surpass Elite Flow Diverter features the BioStealth Surface—a novel surface modification created using a proprietary neutralization process. This process enhances the thromboresistance of cobalt chromium and is supported by both laboratory and animal studies.

Additionally, the device showcases a reengineered implant design that incorporates a higher braid angle and fine-tuned heat treatment. These improvements facilitate better opening, enhanced apposition to the vessel wall, and reduced need for repositioning during deployment. These design enhancements are intended to tackle common procedural difficulties faced by physicians and to simplify the deployment process in complex interventions.

“Surpass Elite Flow Diverter captures the essence of a cobalt chromium device, delivering outstanding performance and exceptional ease of use,” noted Dr. Alejandro Tomasello, Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, Barcelona, Spain.

Many others with early hands-on experience and deep familiarity with the device have echoed this sentiment.

“I have been fortunate to be part of the development of the Surpass Elite Flow Diverter, Stryker’s most sophisticated flow-diverting stent to date,” said Dr. Alex Coon, Carondelet Neurological Institute, Tucson, Arizona.

“My early experience suggests that this device gives physicians the exact blend of device opening, vessel-wall apposition, and surface treatment for which we have all been waiting a decade.”

The Surpass Elite Flow Diverter received both FDA approval and CE Mark in 2024. Prior to full-scale commercialization, Stryker opted for a phased introduction centered on physician education and validation through real-world clinical cases.

“This cadenced launch strategy reflects our commitment to clinical excellence,” said Jim Marucci, president of Stryker’s Neurovascular division. “After carefully validating performance across a diverse set of early cases, we’re pleased to move to this next step and help address unmet customer needs.”

Now broadly available, the Surpass Elite Flow Diverter delivers cutting-edge advancements in both surface technology and implant engineering.
