Johnson & Johnson MedTech has announced the successful completion of the first commercial use of its Varipulse platform in Canada. According to a LinkedIn post by the company, doctors at the Ottawa Heart Institute performed the inaugural commercial procedure using Varipulse. J&J said the procedure “marks a significant step forward” in treating atrial fibrillation (AFib) with pulsed field ablation (PFA) technology.
“A huge thank you to the Ottawa Heart Institute for their partnership in bringing this groundbreaking treatment to Canada,” the company wrote. “Together, we’re committed to advancing cardiac arrhythmia management and helping those with this condition live the lives they want.”
The Varipulse system includes the Varipulse catheter, a variable-loop multielectrode device, along with the TruPulse generator and Carto 3D cardiac mapping system. Integration with the Carto system allows for an intuitive, reproducible workflow with real-time visualization and feedback.
The Varipulse platform offers pulmonary vein isolation through a versatile catheter loop, a user-friendly generator interface, and an intuitive mapping system. It also features contact indicators and pulsed field (PF) tagging for enhanced precision.
Johnson & Johnson MedTech submitted the Varipulse system for FDA approval in late March. If authorized, it would become the third PFA system approved by the FDA for treating AFib, following similar technologies from Medtronic and Boston Scientific.
