Finance & Commerce reports that Boston Scientific is moving forward with a major expansion in Maple Grove, Minnesota.
The Maple Grove Planning Commission has given its backing to a proposed building expansion at the company’s Weaver Lake Road campus. The project will add 84,000 square feet of manufacturing and support space to the existing 86,000-square-foot facility.
The Commission recommended approval of the planned development stage on Monday evening. According to Peter Vickerman, Maple Grove’s planning manager, the City Council is set to make a decision on the expansion approval by December 2. If approved, construction is expected to begin in early 2025.
The new building will be located on an existing parking lot, and the expansion will occur in two phases.
This expansion is part of Boston Scientific’s “Project Black Bear,” a confidential initiative that was only identified as the company’s by Finance & Commerce last summer. The project involves a $170 million investment to create a new divisional headquarters campus.
The company plans to relocate employees from its peripheral interventions, interventional cardiology therapies, Watchman, and urology divisions from both Maple Grove and Minnetonka to the new campus. A spokesperson told MassDevice in mid-2023 that the expansion is expected to create 177 new jobs, with an average hourly wage of $65.
Boston Scientific is already the largest employer in Maple Grove, with approximately 4,000 workers in the city. The company has been steadily expanding its four-building campus near Interstate 94 and Weaver Lake Road in recent years.
