Piccolo Medical Secures FDA Clearance for Next-Gen SmartPICC® System

Piccolo Medical, Inc. has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to bring its next-generation SmartPICC® Stylet and PM2+™ System to market.

This milestone represents a significant advancement in the safety,
efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placements, delivering greater value to both healthcare providers and patients.
The SmartPICC® platform enables real-time, precise catheter tip confirmation at the bedside by using the patient’s cardiac electrical activity.

This proven approach removes the need for chest X-rays to confirm PICC placement, thereby accelerating the process and minimizing treatment delays.
Additionally, the SmartPICC® Stylet includes Piccolo’s unique ionic dilution technology to aid in catheter navigation. This cutting-edge capability gives clinicians real-time directional feedback during insertion, enabling immediate identification of incorrect catheter progression.

“The landscape of PICC procedures in the U.S. has evolved, with catheter navigation systems becoming the undeniable standard of care,” stated Augustus Shanahan, CEO of Piccolo Medical, Inc. “However, the widespread adoption of these systems has often come with a significant financial burden on our healthcare system. We are incredibly proud to introduce a comprehensive vascular access solution to the market that not only prioritizes patient safety and positive outcomes but also empowers hospitals to realize the true economic value of bedside PICC confirmation.”

As part of its go-to-market approach, Piccolo Medical has established an exclusive distribution partnership in North America with Spectrum Vascular, a prominent provider of vascular access and medication management solutions for hospitals nationwide.

“At Spectrum Vascular, we are committed to always delivering leading vascular access solutions that improve outcomes and empower caregivers,” said Ken Miller, CEO of Spectrum Vascular. “By integrating Piccolo’s SmartPICC® navigation technology into our offering, we’re helping clinicians achieve greater accuracy and efficiency at the bedside – reducing complications and improving care. It’s one more way we’re working toward a world with fewer complications and better patient outcomes.”

Piccolo Medical remains dedicated to developing advanced vascular access technologies that enhance both patient care and system-wide healthcare performance. The FDA’s clearance of the second-generation SmartPICC® System strengthens the company’s role as a frontrunner in medical innovation.
